We need philosopher kings
Plato talked about philosopher kings in The Republic. He didn't like the idea of democracy, as you could have any old sod in charge. Instead you should have philosophers in charge who are incorruptible and have a deep knowledge of the human condition.
Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius was this said philosopher king. He lived, ruled and died as a stoic. He believed people's happiness was paramount. And he was well loved for it.
Perhaps Plato was right that we need people who know what they're doing and have a deep understanding of people to rule. In which case democracy would be moot.
Since that will never happen, a philosopher king is nothing but a fairytale. Only the privileged rule and they do it for their own benefit.
