Grenfell Tower fire has filled me with more rage than any terror attack.
Perhaps it's because it's where I grew up. Perhaps it's because it could've so easily been us. Perhaps it's because of the social injustice of it all. But the Grenfell Tower fire has filled me with more rage than any terror attack.
It's a symbol of government failure, from cuts to emergency services to not passing laws to stop political corruption and ensure homes meet health and safety standards.
A reported 150 people were burnt alive. Their last moments on earth were filled with unimaginable terror. They died thinking they didn't matter, no one cared.
But the fire brigade care, the police care, medics care, their neighbours care, the 100s of volunteers care, the 1000s who donated care, their local amenities care, the football club cares, the UK cares.
The only people who don't care are the ones who wouldn't visit the survivors in refuge centres. The ones who took their lives by cutting health and safety corners to save money. The ones who continually vilify the EU about red tape. The ones who won't launch an inquest for self-preservation.
And, unfortunately, the ones we pay and elect to look after us.
