God save the Queen
Today is the Queen's official birthday, so we're treated to Trooping The Colour. And I for one will swell with pride about being British. And I'm not even British by heritage, I'm first generation and I love the royal family.
For some reason, the birth of Princess Charlotte caused a bit of a republican backlash. Perhaps because we were fresh from a Tory majority win at the General Election or just because people are angry at the increasing gulf between the struggling poor and privileged rich. And I know as a lefty, I stand alone as royalist. But I like the royal family. This is why (in no particular order).
The Queen was beautiful, wasn't she? She gives Elizabeth Taylor a run for her money.
I enjoy all the pomp and ceremony involved in all the events, from the Queen's Speech, Trooping The Colour and the honour's list (well done Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Eddie Redmayne - what a fine crop of actors). The regality, glamour and opulence shits all over anything Hollywood or the nouveau riche has to offer.
The royal family gives the UK a sense of history, kudos, power and prestige that is the envy of the world. The British royal family is the most revered across the world.
They do good work in promoting the UK to counteract all the damage the Brits abroad do in Benidorm and Faliraki.
I'd rather people admired golddigger Kate Middleton rather than golddigger Kim Kardashian. Even for a bourgeois girl, Kate has more style and sophistication in her little finger than all of the Kardashian Klan put together.
The royal family evokes a level of nationalism that nothing else does. Football is violent and divisive. We're rubbish at nearly every other sport. The Tories are turning this country into a toff's theme park, so all we have the illustrious history our royal family represent.
We rely on the royal family to honour what's brilliant about this country. Prince Charles commissioned portraits of war veterans, Prince Harry honoured soldiers who lost their lives in Afghanistan, Prince William is an ambassador for BAFTA and Princess Anne was on the committee for London 2012, which was a huge celebration of British talent and innovation from the beginning of time until now.
Throughout history, the royal family has been at the helm of making Britain great. From Queen Elizabeth I starting the empire to Queen Victoria nurturing the country's innovative and industrious spirit to the Queen's father being the beacon of hope during WWII and the Queen herself mucking in with the war effort.
Although powerless, the royal family have the genetics of lots of great rulers - so their opinion is always valued and reported, but ineffectual. If we were to increase their powers, perhaps our government wouldn't be as corrupt and unfair as it is. Personally, I think the royal family has more humanity than any government we elect and they would actually do what's best for the people not their pockets.
Prince Harry is funnier than 90% of the celebrities out there.
The Duke of Edinburgh's gaffs are brilliant value. And he's Greek.
Everyone loves Prince George. All together now, awwwwwwww.
America is sick with envy over our royal family, so we should keep them just because this is our top trump card over them.
And of all the things we have to fight for and battle against, why turn on a family that adds so much value to our sense of nationality, economy, culture and history.
But mainly because they're bloody brilliant ambassadors for one of the greatest country on earth.
