Shifty Disco's newest signing The Race play homecoming gig in Reading

Reading band The Race play homecoming gig to showcase new material

Rising Sun Arts Centre has long been a firm favourite for music lovers in Reading; homely surroundings on Silver Street make it the perfect place for bands such as SixNationState, OK Tokyo and Bloc Party to get intimate with their fans (ahem)! This rang true as The Race sped back into town after a long stint away recording their long-awaited second album In My Head It Works.

Signed to indie label Shifty Disco, the band has previously supported Supergrass and Babyshambles, it was good to see The Race on home turf, doing what they do best - catchy choruses and blistering rhythms that keep your feet tapping. They played debut single Raising Children which was familiar to the 70 strong audience who all started shaking their rock leg to the choruses of ‘why do you stay home…’. The track became a firm favourite on the Radio 1 and XFM playlists and led to the band playing a seminal session last year at the legendary Maida Vale studios in London for BBC Radio 1 Huw Stephens show and a slot on the Carling Stage at Reading Festival.

The Arcade Fire-esque track of I Get It Wrong showed off the dual-vocals of Dan and Jess to perfection, even spotted a Johnny Greenwood inspired riff mid-song which raised a few eyebrows of approval. The new tracks were greeted enthusiastically as frontman Dan tapped at his glockenspiel and stomped through tracks. Having seen them on several occasions, The Race always get it right, they’re set is tight and look like they are having a lot fun, genuinely enjoying what they do.

“Stomping” say Die Young Stay Pretty.
