Electroboys MGMT release album Oracular Spectacular
Much to my disappointment, this album wasn’t an ode to our very own shopping centre. However, they are from New York and previously supported Radiohead, so all is forgiven.
The album opens with Time To Pretend, which is what brought the duo to my attention in the first place. The track is about the fame game and how they are destined to ‘fake it’. The tracks electro rhythms are constant throughout this well-produced track, it’s intelligent and sophisticatedly executed, and it’s a track I will never tire of hearing.
I don’t think it reflects the rest of the album, which is slightly more experimental and innovative, with psychedelic voice effects and dreamy keyboards. Electric Feel is a track that is currently being milked by Radio 1, surpassing the DJs favourite, Kids for airplay, but I personally think it’s the weakest track on the album.
Of Moons, Birds and Monsters is the stand-out track for me, sounding beautifully seventies, with the keyboards, guitar solo, falsetto vocals, psychedelic sound-scaping and I’m sure I heard a theremin in there?! It transported me to an inner-city dance hall, brightly coloured lights swirling around and flares flapping to the rhythm.
MGMT have successfully produced an electro/experimental album, with undercurrents of punk, singing about topics we can all relate to. The tone of the album is distinctly retro, despite being a baby of the digital age, it crackled and reverbed, sounding distinctly analogue, adding to the atmosphere it creates. As a band, not sure how they will progress from here, as an album it is accessible and pulls from many legendary influences, nothing like The Oracle!
