Late of the Pier cash in on Zeitgeist with novel album The Bears Are Coming
I really didn’t want to like Late of The Pier, mainly because of their stupid name and their obnoxious attitude. NME dahlings that are relishing in indie chi-chi, jumped up, pretentious and smug. That aside, their album is actually pretty bloody good!
Opening track Hot Tent Blues is something all us festival-goers can relate to (in the days when summer consisted of sunshine and warmth). It is the high octane electro-spunk that was meticulously put together using bits of their dad’s broken Amiga, Commodore or Spectrum Sinclair.
Launching into the familiar Space and Woods, the single released last year and a song that isn’t far from any respectable indie/electro DJ’s flight case. It is sonic epilepsy, with a bit of schizophrenic guitar thrown in for good measure.
The standout track for me is The Bears Are Coming, which is tribal Mighty Boosh. Its pop dance beats coupled with the crazy trumpets, bleeps and tings that the amusements on Weston-Super-Mare pier (RIP) would be envious of.
It did at times, in every track, make me feel like I was trapped in an 80s computer game, being chased by a green and boxy Gary Numan. However, it was innovative, lively and imaginative use of a concept. They stand up against nu-rave rivals The Klaxons and Hadouken with a sound that just kicks-ass.
The album has got some big hairy balls to take on something that is an acquired taste and pull it off to enormous success, setting them apart from anything out there, a good thing considering that the industry is churning out watered-down indie band after water-down clone of indie band.
“A triumph” says Die Young Stay Pretty.
