David Shrigley at Hayward Gallery, London.

David Shrigley could easily be dismissed as a comedy artist. But by doing this you miss the true rebellious and nihilistic elements to his artistry.

Shrigley's art is simple and hard-hitting, however its simplicity softens the blow. He depicts with great humour the fecklessness of everyday life.

He's almost like Banksy in his attitude, finding humour in the ordinary and extraordinary. However, despite this empathy and daring to say what the rest of us don't dare, his artwork is thought-provoking.

For the most part, his art resembles that of a child. A highly intelligent and astute child, but that this is what it's about. It needs to be simple, so the message doesn't get lost.

If artists did marketing (although you could argue that a lot of failed/frustrated/materialistic artists go on to become marketeers and creative directors), it would be like Shrigley. He takes the everyday and interprets it as the most nihilists caught in a bourgeois, mainstream, rat-race while silently shouting 'gaaahhh'.

This is where his brilliance lies. In a very British introspection.
