Felix from The Maccabees talks dream careers
Phenomenally good, Brighton via London band, The Maccabees release their second coming this month and vox-guitarist Felix is eager to talk about the new album, touring and er…Fulham FC!
What are you career highlights?
“You have to keep looking ahead, it’s up to you to prove that deserve to be where you are. A highlight was playing the Roundhouse.”
What are the bands annoying habits?
“Not sure, it’s important to maintain space when you’re on tour because we spend so much time together. After a while you learn to block it out.”
Are you still in touch with Jack Penate?
“We've all been busy but we keep in touch. There is no rivalry between us, we belong to a separate world, he does his thing and we do ours. We support each other.”
How does the music scene in Brighton differ from London?
“We went to university in Brighton, it’s a small place but there is so much going on. It’s really creative and full of young people, makes it a bit of a bubbling pot. London is big and nothing is big deal.”
If you weren't in a band, what would you be doing?
“I had the best idea for a job, a van selling cheeseburgers outside Fulham FC. I would sell the official Fulham fish and chips and go to all the games selling food to all the Fulham. It would be great, except I won’t be able to watch any of the games.”
Describe the new album Wall of Arms?
“There is a lot more to it then the first one but it retains the Maccabees spirit. It was tough but we have a good bond. It’s renewed our enthusiasm and excitement for playing live.”
How do audiences receive you abroad?
“I love playing New York, their there to have a good time and not judging what you’re doing. They just enjoy watching live music regardless of what it is. The problem with the UK is sometimes the audience is all industry and you miss the vibe that you get from fans.”
Who would you invite to your fantasy dinner party?
“Iggy Pop, Joe Strummer, Roy Hodgeson, Orlando and David Attenborough.”
What items can’t you live without?
“We ask for pistachio nuts on our rider!”
Why start a band?
“Something to do and we had our own gang. Not that I’m a massive fan but Oasis were a big deal when I was 12 and they evoked a spirit and passion. They did their thing and were unapologetic about it, admitting their flaws and being honest with it.”
How do you limber up for a show?
“I'm normally extremely tired beforehand and it’s weird, it’s as if my body knows I'm about to go on stage and I get a rush of energy.”
What are you listening to?
“I've just discover the Beta Band, they are really good. Liking what they do. I also listen to Iggy Pop a lot. I also really like the Root Manuva album, he’s a genius.”
