Michael Fassbender's Macbeth is chilling, tortured and intense

The Scottish play has been given the silver screen treatment by Snowtown director Justin Kurzel. Along with fantastic and underrated actors Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, it promises to be a cerebral and visceral assault on the senses.

Snowtown is harrowing. I want to write lots of colourful prose about it, but I can't get past harrowing. I'm a bit of a horror movies connoisseur and Snowtown managed to shock even me. So when I heard he was directing equally mental and cold Shakespeare play Macbeth, I knew it would be a good one.

Premiered at last month's Cannes Film Festival, the film drew plenty of critical acclaim. Today, we were treated to the first official trailer. And my word, it's good.

The colours, mood and cinematography are dark, atmospheric and beautiful. Fassbender always gives brilliantly emotional, real and intense performances. If you've seen Frank, you'll know what I mean - he steals the show and he's wearing a papier mache head for 99% of the film.

Cotillard is an actress that has been going from strength to strength with performances as an amputee in Rust And Bone and the Oscar tipped Two Days One Night.

Released in the UK on 2 October, Macbeth promises to be one of 2015's biggest movie players.
